Objectives:

A psychiatric emergency is a cluster of conditions in which the capacity of the individual to cope is overwhelmed by acute mental an emotional distress. Clinicians most often encounter individuals who are in crisis in emergency departments and on crisis hotlines. These people require immediate care because they are experiencing severe disturbances of emotion, thought, and behaviour. Of particular concern are people in crisis who suffer from disorders of mood, anxiety, anger, substance abuse, and major mental illnesses.
