Objectives:

Continued traffic growth along congested freeway corridors combined with funding constraints for expansion and improvement projects are limiting implementing authorities¿ ability to provide sufficient roadway capacity in major metropolitan areas. Focusing on trip reliability, active traffic management (ATM) maximizes the effectiveness and efficiency of the facility, and increases throughput and safety with the assistance of integrated technology systems. ATM is the ability to dynamically manage recurrent and non-recurrent congestion based on prevailing and predicted traffic conditions. ATM strategies include ramp metering, incident management, managed lanes, temporary shoulder use, speed harmonisation etc. It is a method of increasing peak capacity and smoothing traffic flows on busy major freeways.
