Objectives:

COURSE OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOMES
¿ Knowledge of the history of the development of urban settlements in different parts of the world
¿ Understanding the forces that shape cities as systems
¿ Understanding the forces that shape systems of cities
¿ Practical understanding of how ideology impacts urban policy and what effect different urban development policies have on urban settlements in different parts of the world
¿ Understanding the spatial, social and economic problems that urban settlements of different size and growth rate face in different parts of the world
¿ Practical understanding of South African planning policy concerned with urban form
¿ Applied knowledge of the research methodologies that are required to analyse different elements of the city, appropriate data requirements, and the availability of the data in appropriate formats in South Africa and elsewhere
¿ Understanding the research priorities related to cities as systems within systems of cities in South Africa
