Understanding Social Research

Estimated cost: R1001 – R5000
Field Of Study: Social science research methodology
Department Name: Sociology and Social Anthropology

On day 1 we begin with a critical evaluation of a broad (textbook) depiction of contending epistemological traditions in the social sciences, before moving on (days 2 and 3) to a more historicized discussion of the manner in which epistemological debates have shaped our current understanding of the social sciences. The twin aims of this module are therefore: to explore epistemological issues; and to provide a conceptual and historical overview of the development of the social sciences and humanities, both as institutionalized knowledge domains and as a collective site of contestation over the manner in which knowledge about the social world is produced and used.
