Comparative Studies in Sustainable Living

Estimated cost: R1001 – R5000
Field Of Study: Sustainable Development
Department Name: USB-ED

The course is structured over a 16-day journey to a remote and highly traditional rural region (only accessible by foot) in order to provide a lived understanding of the transition between traditional, localised economies and a glimpse into ancient ways of being that are rapidly vanishing.
Over this period students will engage with various development theories as they transition from urban to remote cultures, in order to understand in practical terms how globalisation and the spread of consumer cultures affects both personal and global sustainability outcomes in the global South. Strong emphasis is placed on the comparison of students' home contexts with the contexts they encounter on the course.
