The couse has the broad ofjective of conveying knowledge of the behaviour and failure of steel structures. Much of this knowlede is typically gained through experience but this course will convey some of this knowledge through focussed examples and reference to literature.

The main objective is to convey and understanding the stability of steel structures on the level of the whole structure and individual members, and how to ensure stability by choice of geometry and members, and by providing effective bracing.

Secondly, knowledge of correct modelling of steel structures to meet the requirements of the national standard (SANS 10162-1) will be taught.
