As a core competency, development finance practitioners are required to appraise and analyse projects. This is a short course explores the theories and tools available to conduct such appraisals and analyses. It also provides insight into the context, use and limitation of financial analysis and project appraisal fundamentals, theories and tools, specifically in the African context. The course covers such fundamental issues as financial statement analysis, time value of money, risk-return relations; project appraisal techniques including net present value and internal rate of return. The short course will demonstrate how the fundamentals, theories and tools can be used by development finance practitioners to appraise projects, which will inform investment and financing decisions with the aim of enhancing value for money over the long term.
