Target group
Second year university students have been identified as the target group as a great deal of research and work both at an institutional, national and international level has gone into the first year higher education experience. There is a great deal of investment from institutions into the first¿year experience to promote persistence, yet there are high levels of attrition in the second year (Pym, 2019). Often the second year is marked with an increase in developmental, social and academic demands with less support from the institution relative to first year (Pym, 2019). However, there is little research around the development and implementation of second year programmes scaffolding the support and learning received in the first year. Research from the South African Survey of Student Engagement indicates participation by students in high impact practices (Kuh, 2008) lead to positive effects on student learning and retention. The course focused on the development of the holistic student providing universal skills to enable the student to be prepared for the VUCA (volatility; uncertainty; complexity and ambiguity) world. As the SU strategic intent outlines there is an urgent need to ¿reconsider the formation of students towards preparedness to engage and lead in uncertainty¿. The Universal Skills programme is focused on fostering students¿ personal and intellectual development and their capacity to bring about positive change. The programme seeks to empower students towards academic and personal success by encouraging opportunities for learning, intentional engagement, self-reflection, and skill development.
