Abortion: Law & Ethics Online

Estimated cost: R501 - R1000
Field Of Study: Medical genetics ethics and medical law
Department Name: Molecular Biology and Human Genetics

One of the key work areas of the Clinical Genetics Unit relates to genetic counselling of pregnant women with foetal anomalies, teratogen exposure, or a family history of genetic disorders. Counselling is non-directive and aimed at assisting women in difficult emotional circumstances to come to terms with their risk or diagnosis, and where relevant to make informed decisions on continuing their pregnancy or to opt for termination of pregnancy. Abortion is one of the most contested and debated areas in medical ethics. The ethical issues are complex and intractable. Despite this, most clinicians take a view on abortion based on subjective emotivism or based on their religious background. There is a need for an accessible course setting out the legal position and the ethical arguments that form the basis of moral analysis of abortion.
