Objectives:
Soil requirements and soil preparation: To describe and explain soil requirements (physical, chemical, and biological) for vineyards, as well as appropriate physical and chemical corrections during soil preparation. Nutrition: To describe and explain functions, deficiency and toxicity symptoms of essential elementsTo explain the seasonal nutrition requirements of the grapevine, linked to the principles of compiling a fertiliser program. To explain soil and leaf sampling procedures for assessing vineyard nutrient status. To explain and demonstrate fertiliser calculations, using guidelines and analysis results. Vineyard cultivation, weed control and cover crops: To explain different vineyard soil management (cultivation) systems, including advantages and disadvantages of each system. To explain weed control practices (mechanical and chemical). To explain herbicide groups and their application in vineyards. To explain cover crop use and management in vineyards. Irrigation: To explain the seasonal water requirement of the grapevine, as well as the effects of moisture stress and over-irrigation. To explain different irrigation systems, including advantages and disadvantages of each system. To explain and demonstrate principles of irrigation scheduling.
