Accreditation of short courses presented by Stellenbosch University

In terms of the Higher Education Act 101 of 1997 and the SU Statute (Government Notice No 40243 Notice 972 of 2 September 2016), Stellenbosch University is a public higher education institution and in terms of the Act, public higher education institutions do not receive provider accreditation/registration numbers, only private providers are given registration numbers.

The Council on Higher Education is a statutory body established under the provisions of the Higher Education Act 101 of 1997, as amended. The core functions of the CHE include promoting quality and quality assurance in higher education. The latter function is discharged through the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC), a permanent committee of the CHE. Higher education institutions take full responsibility for the academic quality assurance of their short courses and other delegated functions, while the CHE retains its oversight responsibility over these aspects. These short learning programmes do not lead to formal qualifications or part qualifications on the Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF).

Claiming Skills Levy Funds

The Skills Development Levies Act provides for recovery of the levy payment based on the submission of Workplace Skills Plans (WSPs), Workplace Skills Implementation Plans (WSIPs) and the submission of the names of skills development facilitators (SDFs). Stellenbosch University meets all these requirements. Companies or institutions whose employees attend short courses offered by Stellenbosch University can claim money from their Skills Levy Funds, if these short courses are incorporated into their companies’ skills plans which they submit to the SETAs.
